  21. Digital TV by 1997 - NTL
  22. NTL, the commercial company responsible for transmission of terrestrial 
  23. commercial TV in the UK said it will be investing heavily over the next three 
  24. years to ensure that 12 digital TV channels will be available nationwide by 
  25. the end of 1997.
  26. The 12 channels can be carried in the space of one conventional TV channel but 
  27. will require the allocation of precious terrestrial transmission frequencies 
  28. by the UK government. The space was to be given over to a fifth network, 
  29. Channel 5, but that service has always been in doubt ever since the original 
  30. franchise bid caused hardly any interest.
  31. NTL, who have partnered with Pace a year ago to form Pace NTL, put the price 
  32. of set top receiving equipment at around GBP 300.

  35. EBN launches 27 February
  36. EBN:European Business News launches on Monday. The channel will broadcast via 
  37. Intelsat 601 at 27.5 degrees West. Originally a launch had been planned on 
  38. Eutelsat's Hot Bird but since that's still on the ground reserve space was 
  39. taken on Intelsat. EBN will swtich to Eutelsat when the satellite becomes 
  40. operational in late April.

  43. Deutsche Welle plan expansion
  44. ADN/BBC Monitoring via Radio Sweden
  45. Dieter Weirich, director of Deutsche Welle Radio and TV International, 
  46. announced at the Intersat 95 trade fair in Frankfurt that Deutsche Welle will 
  47. launch a 24 hour international TV channel in German, English, and Spanish from 
  48. July 1, 1995. (apparently expanding the current Deutsche Welle TV in those 
  49. three languages, and squeezing the USIA's Worldnet off the transponders, just 
  50. as France's TV5 did a couple of years ago).

  53. News from Asia
  54. More news from Asia in the wake of the Apstar 2 satellite launch failure. The 
  55. loss of Apstar 2 has forced NBC to drop a petition lodged with the FCC in the 
  56. US over ownership of Rupert Murdoch's Fox TV network. The reason ? - NBC needs 
  57. good distribution for it's two Asia channels, NBC Super Channel Asia and Asian 
  58. Business News and it just so happens that Murdoch's Star TV has a free 
  59. transponder. The combined NBC service will launch in the second half of this 
  60. year and be encoded.
  61. NBC had been challenging Rupert Murdoch's ownership of the national Fox TV 
  62. network under foreign ownership regulations. Murdoch became an American 
  63. citizen to qualify for the regulations.

  66. Also this week, The Discovery Channel Asia announced a one year deal with 
  67. Singapore Telecom for uplink facilities for it's Chinese language version to 
  68. Apstar 1. Singapore Telecom currently holds to contract for carriage of 
  69. Discovery's service on the Palapa B2P satellite.
  70. Proving that the Asian market is worth all the fuss over the passed  month 
  71. after the Apstar failure, HBO Asia announced that subsribers in the region 
  72. have more than doubled. The network now counts over 600,000 subscribers to 
  73. it's movies channel.

  76. Israel expands TV broadcasting
  77. Radio Sweden
  78. Israel TV's channel 3 began full-time broadcasting on satellite and cable on 
  79. January 22. It can now be received in most of the Middle East, the Gulf, and 
  80. North Africa. (BBC Monitoring) Presumeably the satellite in question is 
  81. Intelsat 702, which carries three Israeli television channels. Channel 3 is 
  82. listed on 11.023 GHz.

  85. More TV for Australia
  86. A busy week in Australian TV has seen the announcement of no less than three 
  87. new TV ventures.

  89. CNN announced late this week that it would cooperate with the national ABC 
  90. network on a 24 hour news channel called TNC - The News Channel. CNN's part in 
  91. the venture will be in supply of certain programming as well as CNN Newssource 
  92. - the networks global newsfeed operation that supplies other broadcasters with 
  93. coverage of news events.

  95. The latest addition to the Australis pay TV line up will be a channels 
  96. dedicated to children and the whole family focused on non violent programming. 
  97. The encrypted service will begin broadcasting next month according to an 
  98. announcement made earlier this week in Sydney.

  100. Meanwhile proving that it never rains but pours Nickelodeon announced the 
  101. launch of its second international network, Nickelodeon Australia, an 
  102. entertainment channel for children.
  103. The network will be a joint venture with Australian Information Media Pty 
  104. (AIM), which is majority owned by the Australian Broadcasting Corp.  The 
  105. channel will provide children's programming during the day, and a combination 
  106. of high quality documentary drama and general entertainment in the evening, 
  107. featuring ABC and international productions.  The service is expected to begin 
  108. broadcasting later this year and will be distributed to subscribers 
  109. Australia-wide, on all major pay-TV delivery systems, cable and MMDS.
  110. "We're thrilled to partner with  the Australian Broadcasting Company," 
  111. Geraldine Laybourne, President, Nickelodeon/Nick at Nite, said in making the 
  112. announcement.  "Australia is a particularly attractive market for Nickelodeon 
  113. because the attitudes and sensibilities of Australian kids are in tune with 
  114. the innovative approach of Nickelodeon.  We believe Australia will love 
  115. Nickelodeon and we know Nickelodeon will love Australia." Sumner Redstone, 
  116. Chairman of Viacom Inc., said "Viacom's mission is to deliver our products, 
  117. our brands, and our franchises to new audiences around the world. We have 
  118. pursued this mission with a passion and the creation of Nickelodeon Australia 
  119. is an important extension of that mission."
  120. Kim Williams, the head of AIM, said, "Nickelodeon is the premier children's
  121. channel in the U.S. and represents a wonderful opportunity for Australian 
  122. kids. The strength of NICKELODEON'S library and the library of the ABC make us 
  123. uniquely qualified to serve the viewing interests and demands of the 
  124. Australian audience. We couldn't be more excited about this venture."

  127. Canada / CMT dispute continues

  129. The dispute between Nashville's Country Music Television and
  130. Canada's New Country Network could precipitate a broadening trade
  131. war between the United States and Canada.  CMTV has been forcibly
  132. removed from the cable systems in Canada to make way for NCN.  CMTV
  133. believes that this is a violation of the North American Free Trade
  134. Agreement.  CMTV took this to Canada's Supreme Court, but the court
  135. ruled in favor of the ban.  Now CMTV has removed all Canadian
  136. country music artists from their play list and the US government
  137. may be looking into other possible retaliatory actions.

  140. Media Council established in Slovakia

  142. The Slovak cabinet named at its 21 February session the members of the 
  143. government's new council for mass media, which will be an advisory organ 
  144. without decision-making powers. Deputy Premier Katarina Tothova will serve as 
  145. council chairwoman, and Minister of Culture Ivan Hudec will be deputy 
  146. chairman. Aside from the two government members, the 20-member council 
  147. includes three parliamentary deputies from the Movement for a Democratic 
  148. Slovakia; the directors of Slovak TV, Radio and the state news agency TASR; 
  149. and four members of the Association of Slovak Journalists (formerly known as 
  150. the Club for a True Picture of Slovakia). Only one member of the Slovak 
  151. Syndicate of Journalists is represented, Sme reports. Still, Tothova said the 
  152. members represent "a wide spectrum of experts." The cabinet also approved the 
  153. creation of a new Ministry of Construction and Public Works, which was pushed 
  154. forward by the Association of Slovak Workers. Jan Mraz of the ASW was 
  155. appointed minister in December. The Ministry of Transportation, 
  156. Communications, and Public Works will be changed to the Ministry of 
  157. Transportation, Post, and Telecommunications, Narodna obroda reports.
